What happens at a finance assessment centre

The stages, and how to prepare for each.

In brief

  • A finance assessment centre is a half-day or full-day of structured exercises - usually a group exercise, a case study or presentation, one or two interviews, and sometimes a repeat of the online tests. Firms use the format because interviews alone are a weak predictor of performance. Preparation is mostly knowing the format and practising out loud.
  • The day is scored continuously. That sounds intimidating, but it works in a prepared candidate's favour: every exercise is a fresh chance to score, and a wobble in one does not end the day.

The stages before it

Most finance selection processes run: online application, psychometric and situational tests, a recorded video interview, then the assessment centre, sometimes followed by a final interview. The exact mix varies by firm, and each programme's careers page sets out its own stages.
